David Engstrom: Your Guide to Acupuncture & Bodywork in Seattle

Exercise, fitness, and an overall healthy lifestyle have been a major focus in my life from my teenage years as a competitive wrestler through my adult years as a practicing martial artist (Jujutsu). My first experience with Asian medicine, came via injuries sustained from my martial arts training in high school. In my view, being pain free isn’t enough.

I began my career as a respiratory therapist working in major teaching hospitals in Seattle and Dallas, Texas. During my career I have worked in neonatal, adult intensive and surgical trauma units, and emergency rooms. This experience has given me great respect for the technology of Western medical science and conventional therapies, especially in treating acute life-threatening illnesses and trauma.

I am certified in Zen Bodytherapy (Structural Integration), am an advanced (Level Two) practitioner of Physio-Synthesis, and am certified as a personal trainer and corrective exercise specialist through the National Academy of Sports Medicine. I have a Washington State license to practice acupuncture and licenses to practice massage therapy in Washington State and Missouri.

A four-year stay in Kyoto, Japan introduced me to renowned practitioners of Asian medicine modalities, acupuncture, moxibustion, and manual therapy. I also began practicing the classical disciplines of martial arts and calligraphy. I was privileged to learn techniques passed down for generations.

My wife, son, and I visit her home town of Kyoto whenever we can. We visit family, friends, and enjoy the rich culture of the 1,200 year old capitol.

I started seeing David because my doctor had told me I needed back surgery and either hip or knee replacement. I wanted a solution that was less invasive, yet still effective. I didn’t expect David would be so instrumental in my path to self-discovery. I didn’t expect to become more grounded, more self-aware, or more in touch with my emotions and body. I had hoped only for pain relief, and what I got was a way to eliminate the cause of the pain. I encourage anyone who is seeking a holistic approach to health to spend time on David’s table.
